Made possible by a generous philanthropic gift, the HSS Forward program (formerly Durable HSS) helps students appreciate the ways their studies within the humanities and social sciences prepare them for multidimensional and meaningful experiences on the other side of their LSU undergraduate degree. Each of the 26 disciplines represented across HSS's departments and programs builds in students some of the most lasting and necessary knowledge areas, skill sets, and habits of mind for navigating a swiftly-changing world. HSS Forward invites students to recognize and narrate the dynamics of their time in HSS that shape them as thinkers, individuals, community members, professionals, and advancers of human-centered inquiry.
HSS Forward aims to help students think about their post-LSU endeavors, including how their time in HSS develops their portfolio of the most necessary and employer-sought competencies. To find high-impact and successful ways to do this, HSS faculty, with partners in the Olinde Career Center, have developed a series of workshops—by and for HSS faculty—in which to share some of the ways they have experimented with career readiness integration in their courses. These workshops offer HSS faculty the chance to connect the communication, analytical thinking, judgment, leadership, ethical reasoning, and human understanding already embedded in their courses to explicit learning outcomes, course assignments, career language, and professional pathways.
